Crowd Control Setup Guides

1. Start with the App

• Open the Crowd Control Desktop App

• Select Left 4 Dead from the game list

• Follow the Auto Setup checklist (left side of the app)

• Auto Setup installs the Crowd Control server plugin into left4dead\addons\

• Left 4 Dead also has an Input Disrupts pack. This guide covers the full effects pack.

2. Test Before You Stream

• Effects can only be tested after pressing "Start Session" in the app

• Always test a few effects before going live

• Skipping this can lead to broken streams and confusion!

Multiplayer (Co-op)

• Effects run server-side, so every player in your game sees and feels them

• You host. Start a lobby and choose a local server, or run your own dedicated server

• Friends who join your game install nothing. Their Crowd Control effects are sent to your game and land on their own survivor

• Every streamer in the lobby who wants viewer effects needs the Crowd Control app running. The host must have the mod installed, or effects come back unavailable for everyone

• Official Valve matchmaking servers cannot run the mod

VAC and Secure Servers

• The plugin is unsigned. While it is installed, the game runs in insecure mode

• Insecure mode cannot join VAC-secured (official) servers

• Co-op lobbies between friends are not affected

• To play on official servers again, uninstall the mod (see Uninstall below) and restart the game

Mod Compatibility

• Our mod is a Source server plugin (l4d_cc.dll). It does not use the add-on system

• Workshop add-ons are not affected and keep working

• Mod package: Left4DeadCC-CC.zip

• Other server plugins may conflict. If you have issues, try with just Crowd Control

• No mod conflicts reported so far. Let us know if you find one!

Game Version

• Tested with the Steam version of the game

• Other game stores may work but have not been tested

Notes

• Press F9 in-game to force the plugin to reconnect to the Crowd Control app

• Each effect is announced in game chat. Type cc_messages 0 in the console to turn announcements off

• The console (~) shows [CrowdControl] Crowd Control 0.1.0 loaded for Left 4 Dead when everything is working

• A log is written to %LOCALAPPDATA%\l4d-cc\l4d_cc.log for troubleshooting

Uninstall

• In the CC desktop app, select your game

• Click the trash icon next to "Mod Installed" to run the uninstaller

• Restart the game afterwards to return to secure mode
